What Is Thermal Management?

HVAC, battery, and heat exchange systems in vehicles have a maximum temperature limit they can withstand before malfunctioning. Thermal management is an engineering and design concept based on thermodynamics and heat transfer. Thermal management systems are designed to control the operating temperature to ensure battery, HVAC, and heat exchange systems function smoothly without interruption. An effective thermal management system sufficiently distributes and dissipates heat away from a heat source using convection, conduction, and/or radiation.

The Importance of Thermal Management

In an age where heating and cooling products are higher-powered, more electrified, and digitally connected, thermal management systems are more important than ever. Because these products produce more heat and are expected to run efficiently, thermal management systems must meet the device’s specifications as well as industry standards. We offer custom-designed belt drive compressors that come in mounting and plumbing configurations. Our compressors provide superior performance because we design them with perfectly designed pulley diameters and belt interfaces to match specific accessory drives. We also offer elastomeric clutch dampers that reduce clutch engagement noise and buffer accessory drive dynamics.

We also provide specialized electric compressors for automotive refrigeration systems. They function as circulation, compression, and suction pumps and help to raise the temperature and pressure of the refrigerants. The electric compressors are compatible with R134a and R1234yf refrigerants and are suitable for off-road vehicles, buses, trucks, and passenger cars.

We manufacture high-quality steel and aluminum accumulators and receiver driers in various forms to meet specific industry needs. We offer the Standalone Receiver Drier—featuring a separate condenser—and the Integral Receiver Drier, which has an integrated condenser.

We provide heat exchangers with custom designs and configurations that provide effective solutions for transportation sectors such as fire protection, rescue, agriculture, construction, and military. Our in-house fitting team can customize heat exchangers with multi-flow condensers and various mounting or fluid connection options.

Thermal expansion valves also form part of our critical thermal management products. These durable, high-performance valves have patented features, original tooling, and refrigerant controls to meet our customers’ specifications.

SMP® Engineered Solutions’ in-house research and development lab and design center develop advanced, flexible line and hose assemblies for original equipment manufacturers (OEMs) and original equipment suppliers (OESs). We test each assembly using salt spray chambers, helium leak testers, high-temperature furnaces, and more to ensure high-quality products.

We also manufacture brushless and direct current (DC) motors, both 12-volt and 24-volt. These motors maintain high efficiency and durability at all speeds, ideal for on- and off-highway vehicle applications.

We hold several patents on our fan clutch designs. We are a reputable OES supplier of fan clutches, with experience working with Wheeler Brother, GMNACC, Ford, Chrysler, Clark MHS, and more. No project is too big or too small for us. Our in-house capabilities allow us to fulfill unique requests for fan clutches with custom fan pilots and shafts that meet specific application needs.
